We are a secular, inclusive learning community for families who want to grow and learn with friends in our beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

We are homeschooling to raise kind, compassionate, self-directed learners. We value self-awareness, bodily autonomy and self-directed education. Our programming is meant to enrich whatever educational model families are practicing at home by building community and offering support.

FAQs

  • We know that learning begins at birth and never stops. All families are welcome in Grubby and Co. Some field trips may be more geared towards a particular age, but everyone is welcome.

  • A secular learning community is not centered around religious practices. Resources and programming shared within the group will not be from a religious lens. Families who practice a religion are welcome to join, as long as they can be welcoming to all in return.

  • To cover expenses and provide an awesome expereince, families are asked to pay $25/season or $75 for the whole year. Cost should never be a barrier to finding your community, if the fee is prohibitive, please reach out to Ali to gain access at no or lower cost.

There may be an additional cost to certain field trips and programming we will always do our best to get a group rate or save in other ways. If you would like to contribute beyond the base rate to subsidize costs for another family, please let me know.

  • We’ll learn with the seasons so who knows! We’re unschoolers over here, so every day looks different! #waldorfroutinesareapipedream.

But seriously, you can mostly count on Walk Wednesdays, which will be our hiking and free play days and Field Trip Fridays, where we do a little more intentional learning.

There will also be monthly family fun nights, quarterly book clubs and other seasonal events.

In the summer, we’ll focus more on swimming and exploring. In the fall, we’ll harness that new year energy to do some longer cooperative learning.

  • To get real time updates, we’ll use the Band app, which is totally free. We’ll also post a seasonal calendar so that you can pTan ahead.

This means, no more having to deal with facebook for yet another group or being on text threads for events you can’t attend. It also means knowing the plan for the season before it begins, while allowing for go-with-the-flow, last minute opportunities as well.
